FINAL RACE REPORT
Legs 11 & 12, Saturday 26 September - Lower Waimakriri – Criterium Races x2
‘James & Ross Murdoch secure NZ1’
After 12 legs of intense racing over some of the country’s most demanding and formidable jet boating rivers, the NZ Jet Boat River Racing Association Inc., has a new National Champion. The team of James and Ross Murdoch has now earned the right to display the coveted title and race number NZ 1 on their boat Carlton Hotel for the coming year, and, perhaps more importantly, to defend this title in persuit of a World Championship title this time next year over much the same course.Just nine of the twenty or so teams that lined up at the start of the marathon one week ago remained in contention for overall honours at the start of the last day of racing on the lower reaches of the Waimakariri. Others had succumbed to mechanical problems or, as a result of navigational or technical problems had incurred DNF and/or DNS penalties that eliminated them from the overall results even though they remain in contention for class results. The organizers had set a course of some 12 km around a circuit of the lower Waimakariri that included traversing a number of shallow shelves in addition to some deeper, fast flowing sections that produced some nasty pressure waves. Each competitor would be required to complete four laps of the course and there would be two legs run – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The weather forecast was mixed – gusty nor’west in the morning turning strong sold sou’west around noon with rain throughout the afternoon and evening. Great!Going into the last stages of the event, Rob and Mike Pooley held a slim 14 second lead over the Murdoch team with Regan Williamson in third position some 45 minutes behind the leading two. The work was on the two leading boats to complete the legs cleanly while Pooley had to defend his slender lead from the obviously faster boat behind him while the Murdoch team had to also complete the course cleanly but peg back that time advantage. The stage was set for an epic battle. The first wave comprised the C class boats of Andrew Stuart and Kruse Davidson, the D class entries of Aaron Morrison, Brendan Cameron and Callum McKenzie and the two Sportjet powered R class boats of Craig Robertson and Tony O’Laughlon. Andrew Stuart’s Impala Keystone Decorators was first off the line closely followed by Kruse Davidson’s Keelow Craft tunnel, Bannokburn Fruits. These two boats remained in the lead for the entire leg with very little straight-line speed difference apparent between them. The long monohull of Andrew’s boat was able to negotiate the hairpin turns at either end of the course a little faster than Kruise’s tunnel but both 302ci Chevvy engines performed sweetly making for close racing.Similarly, the D class boats displayed very similar boat speed with Aaron Morrison’s Nissan powered boat Stealth Racing having a slight advantage over the Toyota powered boats of McKenzie and Cameron. The second wave included the four B class boats remaining in the field led by Daniel Anderson’s Keelow Craft tunnel, The Ranch. This boat was clearly the fastest in the class and soon extended a significant lead over his nearest rival Bryce Idiens in a similar hull, Smack Face. Byron Campbell, enjoying his first marathon complete with all the highs and lows of this type of racing, drove his Kwik Kraft tunnel smoothly while the American/Canadian entry led by Ryan Ringer in Outlaws circulated faultlessly. All remained well until Idiens suffered a moment of brain fade and dived down a shallow side stream where his boat came to an ignominious halt requiring subsequent retrieval from the support boats to exit the course. The third wave included the three remaining A class boats in the field. Dominated by the blisteringly quick Murdoch boat Carlton Hotel the leg soon settled into a procession of Malcolm Jenkins’s Keelow Craft tunnel The Hairy Mussel Company and Paul Collings distinctive orange painted Kwik Kraft tunnel Jet Stream Services. With the title in sight James Murdoch showed no mercy on his 450ci Ford powered boat and blasted around the course in a time of 19:59 – the fastest time of the day. Although he couldn’t know it he had, by this stage secured his title. The Unlimited class has often suffered the greatest attrition rate in previous events but, this year, has redeemed itself with four top boats venturing on to the water for the final day of racing. Led by the Pooley Kwik Kraft tunnel Just Mussels the field included the boats of Chris ‘Turbo’ Campbell, Roger Preston and Regan Williamson all of which sported big block Chevy engines of greater then 500ci displacement. They put on a great spectacle – visually and audibly. Rob and Mike Pooley led from start to finish completing the leg in a time of 20:46. Second fastest time was recorded by Turbo in 22:24 who in typical fashion, proclaimed his quote for the day at prize-giving – “ Turbo Say: Man in race boat with hand on c***k deserve roll over” – a less than cryptic reference to his escapade on the Waitaki. As forecasted, the cold southerly front hit the Waimakariri just after the conclusion of the first session in the afternoon that had been completed in much the same fashion as that in the morning. The final leg for the A class boats was conducted in the cold and rain where James Murdoch further extended his grip on the title lodging a time of 20.00 – just 1 second slower than that recorded in his morning session. Malcolm and Edward Jenkins had a violent spin after hitting a pressure wave but recovered to record a time of 27:45.The final session for the Unlimited boats saw a repeat of the morning run with the exception that Regan Williamson recorded second fastest time behind Rob Pooley and ahead of Turbo. In the end the Murdoch team had won their first National Title by one and half minutes ahead of the hard charging Pooley team. It was a close finish to more than five hours of intense racing. An emotional James Murdoch paid tribute to this team and particularly the support and enthusiasm of his father, Ross with whom he shared the honours at the prize-giving function later that night. NZJBRRA President and second place getter, Rob Pooley also paid tribute to the result by saying the best team won on the water. Pooley was obviously delighted with the way the event had been conducted and was generous in his praise for the organizing team who triumphed often in demanding circumstances. Things look really good for the Worlds next year with much interest being expressed among prospective competitors.Reports / Images - if you would like to submit a Race Report or Race Photos - please email HERE Return to top of page
