Waimakeriri River – SH1 Bridge to Woodstock and return September 25

The Helipro 2009 U.I.M World Jet Boat River Racing Marathon began with a cold morning and rain which settled in for the entire day. NZ1 and 388 continued their consistent fast pace and finished ahead of the field by a good margin. While NZ1
had a clean run in the difficult conditions, Spencer in Sunset Shaker suffered "the worst visibility I have ever raced in".

Mark Agnew in 52 had dream run up stream finishing 3rd just minutes behind, while 216 was no where to be seen at the finish,
later crossing the line with push poles in view beside the nav after nearly rolling over a dead end chute. Steve Price's
Cinderella story was tempered a little with electrical issues on the way up and finished at a lesiurely pace. The 777 and 52
teams had a good run up, at one point jumping gravels bars at 60mph to get around a very stuck 216. 41 had motor issues and
run aground requiring a trailer out, they worked hard to get the boat to the top and start the down leg.

The down leg for the first few boats provided some clearer weather on the bottom of the river, with Nz1 increasing his lead
over 388, however the 460ci Ford in NZ1 sounded a little sick and the motor is out tonight to investigate. 216's issues on
the way up gave Mcmaster in 52 a handy lead, however time came and went and 52 lost it's advantage due to a wrong channel
decision, Mcmaster clearly not happy showed some good spirit once back on the trailer and over the line. 367 after being
involved in a collision with another boat on the Waiau is back on the boil and finished 6th in the poor conditions. Mark
Agnew in 514 had a plate on his hull come loose causing a nose down attitude, later spinning with contact on the bank, some
immediate repairs were required and the resulting slow pace allowed 83 to gain a good lead.

Waitaki River – SH1 Bridge to Kurow September 23

Day 5 of The Helipro 2009 U.I.M World Jet Boat River Racing Marathon began with crisp clear conditions, chilly 3 deg c chill in the air and a fresh dusting of snow on the hills.
The up run to Kurow like other days was raced hard by all teams from the get go, with very few 'conserving' speed or equipment. NZ1 was first across the line with Spencer in 388 just seconds behind, having made up some good time. Garth in Full Boost 52B was in 'full race mode' and caught up a good minute on 216 running the Toyota 3.0l at 22lb boost. This compares well with Malcolm's 216 boat running 400ci, 650hp at 6000rpm, with both boats crossing the line together. The 56 boat was passed by the Sutherland boys in 83, the cold conditions causing ice issues in their carby as they raced through the hail. The “prophet” Steven Price predicting the down run race record may be broken by someone with a clean run.

Down run saw 388 claw a little more time back from NZ1 while 52 crossed the line 3rd from the opposite bank, 216A followed clocked at 161km/h. The superbly presented D class 'Alexcraft'
team had an 'awesome' day on the river, a contrast to the previous days racing adventures running down an irrigation channel. Daniel Anderson in 25 had an exciting run down river chasing Kruse Davison in 66 with some tense passing moments.

Tomorrow is a lay day for rest and maintenance, before racing continues on the most jet boated river in the world, the Waimakariri River

Rakaia River - Lagoon to Gorge Bridge

Day 4 of The Helipro 2009 U.I.M World Jet Boat River Racing Marathon was run under clear skies on a low trickey to navigate river. James Murdoch in NZ1 was happy to be at the top first after hitting a rock, with Spencer King in 388 chasing hard all the way up, his damage from the Waiau showing no ill effect. The A Class entry of Malcolm Jenkins took an alternative route to the top via a 'goat track', despite this his boat is showing good speed and he crossed in 3rd place at the gorge. John Derry in boat 36 was trailered out, Slowpoke 10U ran out of fuel within sight of the gorge and Ben Quin's dream run in 624 ended when they ran aground.

All drivers who arrived at the lagoon on the down leg had plenty of stories to tell of racing down tracks, jumping bars and running the gauntlet where pleasure boats would normally not dare. NZ1 was first with King close behind, but not before they followed the river all the way to the sea mouth for a little fishing! 216 had a wild ride down followed by a very happy Steve Price who has been going very strong this marathon, even though his coil broke loose and was swaying around in the bilge for the whole leg. The Sutherland boys lost an exhaust manifold on the way down and thought they had blown a motor, some quick No.8 work and they were soon across the finish in good time. The 'STIG' Mark Agnew in 514 has not touched his set-up since day 1 and is pleased with his boat thus far. A tough day for some, exciting racing for others, just another typical day out on the Rakaia.

Waiau River - Spotswood to Hanmer Springs and return to Waiau

Day 3 of the Helipro 2009 U.I.M World Jet Boat River Racing Marathon was always going to be an intense days racing on the Waiau River. Racing conditions were supurb with a lowish flow, clean water, low wind, blue skies and fast straights
separating the notoriously tricky sections. Local Canterbury boater James Murdoch in NZ1 is 15mph down on speed relative to the U class boats and by his own admission went "very hard" all day to maintain and hold his lead. Rookies Ben Quin and Rodney
Heads reveled in the conditions making very clean runs both ways, even with the media helicopter following above their transom chasing them down stream.

Despite hearing on the radio that 36U were high and dry, they crossed the finish line at Hanmer in 2nd place, this uncertainty of boat whereabouts was typical for the day. Boths legs were littered with hard luck stories, many teams ruining into trouble either mechanical or groundings. Good comrade-re is a trait of jet boaters the world over and today was no exception with many boats stopping their race to assist a fellow competitor in need of immediate first aide. All classes were plagued with incidents with broken cranks, steering failure, unit bearings, spins, trips through the willows and damaged hulls.

The turbine boat suffered a flame out on the up stream leg when it ingested water and was unable to re start/continue. We had an opportunity to interview Ryan whilst he waited for his trailer crew, despite the obvious disappointment and the great deal of public interest he was carrying, he showed a good measure of gentlemanly sportsmanship and we hope his team will return again. Ryan and his boat attracted a lot of interest so stay tuned for a full report in the next JBNZ publication.

Racing continues tomorrow with two long legs on the Rakaia River from the ocean to the Southern Alps

Waimakariri River Criterion

Spectacular weather conditions, a clean low river and a large crowd made for an epic start to the 2009 Helipro World Jet Boat River Racing Marathon

D Class was away first at 10 sec intervals and the nervousness showed as two boats (35c, 650) went the wrong way, however they quickly recovered and settled in by the 2nd lap. Early on a good duel between 107D and 454D developed. 46D developed issues and took some time to get going again, a Robbie 44 Heli dropped down to take a closer look and offer some advice.

A Class was well contested with various boats coming in close proximity on some of the tighter passing areas. 25A was on the pace early on and later developed an oil leak via the rocker cover and unexplained vibrations persisted. They plan on chasing the problems tonight and we hope to see them going hard on the Waiau river tomorrow. NZ1 went very well against the higher classes and finished fastest today ahead of the U class boats, despite breaking his intake grill in half on the last lap.

U Class was split into two waves with 7 boats in each. All seemed to take it easy early on, no doubt thinking about the week ahead, it was not long before a few were hard at it with some spins at the turn around buoys. 307U overshot the top buoy on lap 1 and lost all places, very determined he made up 3 places in a good display of driving all the shortcuts!

B Class was well contested with various groups of boats being competitive from the get go. 83B the brothers Sutherland, keen to put in a good result were plagued with an engine off song and a bit of work to do tonight.

The final wave of U Class boats was clearly a favorite for the spectators with huge crowds reminiscent of the early NZ Marathons. No doubt many were here to see the turbine powered boat compete directly with Mark Cromie and Spencer King as they all set off 10 seconds apart. A spectator pleasing race developed for a few laps with the turbine boat going the wrong way at one point and Cromie touching the bank in pursuit. Cromie having little trouble chasing down the turbine seemed comfortable.

With all boats now well and truly shaken down the coming week is sure to provide some of the most competitive boating
seen in years on the challenging South Island Rivers.

Tech Inspection - 2009 Helipro World Jet Boat Marathon

19 September 2009 | Matthew Fallow

The Racecourse Hotel Christchurch hosted the Tech Inspection and drivers meeting today.

All race boats were required to attend for scrutineering safety inspections and a long drivers meeting detailing the event over the next 8 days. This also gave the public a chance to view the race boats and chat to the teams. With a large field of Unlimited boats entered and strong fields in all classes, it was a great sight to see so many boats lined up in the hotel forecourt, a large crowd gathered all day.

The Helipro 2009 U.I.M World Jet Boat River Racing Marathon promises to be a great event this year for spectators with 2 Criterion legs to be held on the Waimakariri River at Christchurch.

Stay tuned here for daily updates and official results.
